After we parted, I walked over to a nearby bench and sat facing the water. I was invigorated by today’s meeting. It was a genuine breakthrough, and the electric ripples were palpable throughout my body, and even throughout the atmosphere itself. I had been concerned that more embodiment work would compel Michael to retreat… but, instead, he opened the door to his heart wider, making profound admissions about his early life. It was a marvelous sight to behold. A very real part of him was ready to transform.

At the same time, I could feel his resistance looming ever close. It wasn’t as obvious as it had been in the beginning, when it came through in the form of verbal jousting… but it was still in there, tugging at the seams. I could subtly sense it, waiting patiently to rear up and impede his progress. That’s the nature of the healing journey. The closer you get to the core material, the more sentries rise up to protect it. Today, they may be fast asleep. Tomorrow, they may come out all guns blazing.

It was almost sunset, and the red glow over the water was breathtaking. I breathed all of it in, allowing it to soak into my cells. And then, my own little wave of resistance took shape. Suddenly, I wanted a coffee, and felt an urgent need to get home. It had been an intense day of space-holding, while vicariously accompanying the journey. I wanted a time-out. In this way, I was no different from Michael. I could only take in the deep feeling for so long, before retreating into my mind, or looking for a subtle way to feel safe and cozy again. This seems to be intrinsic to the human condition. We spend our lives working toward these rare moments of deep feeling. And then retreating from them, only to begin the quest once again. I wondered: What will it take before we can all remain there—holding the magnificence safe and building it into a crescendo of delight? What will it take before we will all stop playing hide-and-seek with the Divine?
